Chapter One

NEW ROCHELLE

 

I have been working on this book for a long time.  To me, it has a life of its own.  It breathes.  It grows and changes.  It ages.  The young man who begins the book is not the old man who is still writing it now.  I want it to be immediate.  I want people not only to read my life, I want them to see it, feel it.  I hope in its pages, you will find a mostly comic portrait of an artist and the time in which he lived.  More importantly, I hope you will find a human being.

 

The hurts of childhood.  The wounds that stay with us all our lives.
